How much money does your cellphone company make selling your data to police? U.S. Rep Ed Markey tried to force the cell companies to say how much they’ve made off of police requests for user data. Most of them weren’t forthcoming, but AT&T and a small cell company called US Cellular disclosed. Slate was able extrapolate from that to figure out how much cash the big cell companies are probably making – it’s mostly in the $5-30 million dollar range.
