A prison is a trap for catching time.

This New Yorker piece. It’s about jail in the U.S., and it’s so smartly put together and well written.

“A prison is a trap for catching time.”

“What prisoners try to convey to the free is how the presence of time as something being done to you, instead of something you do things with, alters the mind at every moment.”

“The normalization of prison rape—like eighteenth-century japery about watching men struggle as they die on the gallows—will surely strike our descendants as chillingly sadistic, incomprehensible on the part of people who thought themselves civilized.”
